"My Child Doesn't Like Sports": What Actually Helps

Shy, unsporty or afraid of losing? How parents can help a reluctant child enjoy movement without pressure or comparison.

"He's not sporty." "She hates PE." Many children who say this don't dislike movement. They dislike being judged for it.

Common Reasons Children Avoid Sport

  • Fear of being the weakest
  • Fear of letting a team down
  • A single embarrassing moment that stuck
  • Formats where only the best get a turn

What Doesn't Help

Forcing attendance, comparing with a sibling or cousin, or promising it'll be fun and then putting them in a competitive drill.

What Does Help

  • Start with games, not 'sport': Team challenges and relays have no skill barrier at the door.
  • Choose team formats: When effort counts for the group, one mistake matters less.
  • Let them watch first: Ten minutes on the side during a trial is fine.
  • Praise effort, not results: 'I saw you keep going' lands better than 'you won'.
  • Give it a few sessions: Confidence builds slowly.

Signs It's Working

They stop asking 'do I have to go?', they mention a new friend, or they try something they refused before.
