What Kids Really Learn Through Active Games

Relays and team games build agility, coordination and teamwork. Here's what children gain when fitness is built around play.

Watch children in a playground and you'll see them doing what fitness coaches design programs for: sprinting, dodging, balancing, climbing, and cooperating. They don't call it training. They call it playing.

Skills Hidden Inside Games

  • Agility: Dodging and changing direction in fast-moving games.
  • Coordination: Throwing, catching, and moving together with others.
  • Balance and body control: Stopping, turning, and starting quickly.
  • Teamwork: Working out a plan and sticking to it with teammates.
  • Resilience: Losing a round and playing again.

Why Games Work Better Than Drills for Children

Drills are repetitive and individual. Games are social and varied. A child who would resist 'ten sprints' will run happily for 40 minutes if there's a game to win.

What to Look for in a Kids' Program

  • Movement for most of the session, with little standing in line
  • Games that vary from week to week
  • Coaches who encourage rather than rank
  • A friendly, team-based atmosphere

The long-term gain: children who associate exercise with fun are more likely to keep moving as they grow. The habit matters more than any single skill.
